Marimekko

Marimekko Pre-Spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection

For the year 2023, Finnish design house Marimekko sets a completely new mood. The Pre-Spring 2023 collection draws inspiration from Retro Futurism. A carefully curated continuum of archival Marimekko prints is combined with invigorating, retrospective fashion cues, and more responsible material choices. The new season’s wardrobe plays with monochromatism, the mix of architectural and organic form, and the fascinating dialogue between positive and negative space.

This season’s 1960’s space-age fashion references are seen through retro-futuristic shapes, the mini length, extra-wide trouser styles, and the return of the skort. These nostalgic classics are tweaked for the modern age by the choice of material and print alike. Retro sport and utilitarian influences are communicated through the functional application of pockets, drawstrings, zippers, and metallic snap buttons. Aligning with the fashion language of the 60’s, silhouettes of the season are A-line and straight.

Seasonal colors & prints
For Pre-Spring 2023, seasonal colors offer a combination of energetic rosehip reds, buttery yellows, and spearmint pastels, perfectly balanced with the neutrals of the collection. As the season moves ahead, the reds grow in their vibrancy. This season’s colors are designed for monochromatic dressing and effortless combining of colors and prints. For this season, monochromatism also translates into mono-pattern dressing, where one pattern is seen across an entire outfit and can be easily worn with tone-to-tone solid pieces, thereby creating multiple styling options.

This season’s prints have been exclusively selected from Marimekko’s print archive, mainly from the 1960’s. The season’s sporty reference is evident in the multitude of stripes seen across majority of prints. The more traditional stripes, such as Linja (line) by Pentti Rinta and Maalis (march) by Maija Isola are balanced with more contemporary, even abstract stripes, including Albatrossi (albatross) and Meduusa (jelly fish) by Maija Isola and Koukero (curl) and Iso Laine (big wave) by Annika Rimala. Other hero prints for the season include lace-like Rentukka (kingcup) by Kaarina Kellomäki, Savanni (savanna) by Maija Isola.

Seasonal colors & prints
Marimekko continues to introduce more sustainable material alternatives each season. The responsibly sourced knitwear pieces take central role for this season’s sustainable products. All the wool used in the Pre-Spring 2023 collection is made of yarns, which are certified with RWS (Responsible Wool Standard). In addition, the collection introduces products that are made from more responsible materials, such as ECOVERO VISCOSE, which is made from viscose fibers derived from sustainable wood and pulp from certified and controlled sources. The manufacturing of ECOVERO branded viscose fibers generate up to 30 percent lower emissions and water impact compared to generic viscose.

For the first time, the UNIKKO (poppy) silk shirt staple is now made of more sustainable silky cupro. Cupro is a semi-synthetic plant-based bio-degradable fabric made from cotton linter and has the characteristics of silk fabric — cool, breathable, and it is durable, wear-resistant, and antistatic than silk.
The classic Marimekko jersey dresses are made of 100% certified organic cotton. Marimekko also continues to experiment with new natural dyes. For this season, the natural shade of willow provides a beautiful light shade of beige to the garments. The season’s bags and accessories also include more sustainable material choices. The newly launched pillow bags are now made from 100 percent recycled polyester – this includes the main material, lining, and padding.
In additional to the physical stores, the collection is also available at the NEW Marimekko Hong Kong online store: http://www.marimekko.hk
