Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Launches Second Collaboration at M+ Exhibition
Louis Vuitton celebrated the Hong Kong launch of their collaborative collection with prolific Japanese designer, Yayoi Kusama. a timeline of Kusama’s life and work for which one particular milestone was the first Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Collection – pieces of which are still very much sought-after by collectors and fans of both the Maison and the Artist.

The launch event took place in Lightwell Hall at M+ where Kusama’s famed motifs added a multi-coloured palate to accommodate the imaginative sensorial journey of the event filled with immersive performances. Kusama herself is a priestess of a total, hypnotic and colourful art, and the event paid tribute to her reputation with mesmerizing lighting visuals and colourful polka dots that entirely invaded the floorspace of Lightwell Hall. The designer’s visage also adorned the walls, with Hong Kong’s famous skyline reflected in her sunglasses, adding a fun playful photo-call throughout the venue.

Further into the venue, the Dai Pai Dong Night Market added a Hong Kong-centric culinary spin, with the Dai Pai Dong-style round tables, chairs and food outlets all wrapped in a host of different colours that were also sprinkled with the continuing motif of multi-coloured polka dots. Food was fun and casual with a sophisticated twist, while cocktails were served in retro glass bottles juxtaposed next to cute Gacha machines to add a touch of nostalgia triggering the collective memories of all Hongkongers.

Specially curated performances that fuse music with visual and performance arts created an aptly spectacular accompaniment to the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama theme of the evening. Jing Pang’s performance art entitled “The Glamorous Turbulence” was a look into the connections between the body and spirituality, subject and object, the active and passive, limitation and freedom, past and future, being and nothing. This deep interpretation was further bolstered by a section called “Listen to Kusama” that was helmed by composer Fung Lam’s dramatic and distinct input. As one of the foremost Asian composers of his generation, he drew from his experience in dance, theatre, concert and multi-media to create the sonic palette for the evening. Adding the beat in the engine room were classical and pop musicians Jovin Lee and Atlas Lu who have joined forces to create the DJ duo JVSY, known for their cross-genre explorations with elements from house, techno, electronica, drum and bass, nu-jazz and more in a signature cinematic sound. moon.noon added a real-time visual element as an artist who creates audio-visual experiments live, using sound, sight, time and sensory data to weave into abstract vignettes and storytelling experiences.

In line with Louis Vuitton’s past artistic collaborations, the encounter between the Maison and Yayoi Kusama is grounded in sincerity, in iconoclasm, and above all, in a mutual appreciation of craft and excellence over the commonplace. Perhaps it is most fitting that this incarnation of the Louis Vuitton and Kusama creative exchange starts where the 2012 conversation left off, with a gift. A gift that encompasses their two worlds most completely, Yayoi Kusama took one of the most timeless and magical of the Maison’s emblematic objects and made it her own – she hand-painted a Louis Vuitton trunk with her characteristic polka dots, dots that, for Kusama, represent infinity.
In creating infinity for the second time, the new Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Collection will bring the artist’s emblematic motifs to the Maison’s creations, and this dynamic event to launch the collection is but a brief introduction to the magical objects that transcend time and space.
